Downspout Boot Sizing: An Overview

Published on: 10/20/2016 2:55 PM

Cast iron downspout boots are not a "one size fits all” kind of product.

Due to their multi-functional role and the tremendous variation in building designs and drainage systems, virtually every project is different when it comes to the size and type of downspout boots it requires. Whether it’s a large high school project or a small fire station, a distribution center or a fieldhouse, in order to provide a downspout boot that meets the needs of each project it is necessary to have an extensive range of sizing options to choose from.

A downspout boot must be sized to perform the following tasks:

1.    Receive roof drainage from the downspout entering through the top bell.

The top bell size of the cast iron boot is determined by the sizing of the gutter and downspout system. Downspout sizes on a gutter system vary based on rainfall intensity, roof area and roof design.

2.    Tie in properly with the underground drainage system at the bottom outlet.

The bottom outlet of the downspout boot may be Offset, Angular or Ninety Degrees depending on subsurface conditions such as the footer location, utility lines and downstream pipe elevations. The bottom outlet also must be of the proper diameter to connect to the underground drainage pipe.

3.    Provide protection from impact above ground at the specified height.

The height of the boot is dependent on the desired level of protection on the building wall. In areas with high foot traffic or the use of mobile equipment the cast iron boot may extend 4 – 6 ft. up the building wall to provide adequate protection, whereas less active areas may only require 6” or 1 ft. above surface grade.

4.    Meet all architectural and aesthetic specifications of the building design.

The architecture of the building often plays a role in the size and type of the downspout boots required. The downspout boots must suit the designer’s vision for the appearance of the building, whether that means blending in with the surroundings or standing out as an architectural enhancement.

As a result of these requirements, a wide range of size combinations is necessary for a downspout boot to do its job properly. In order to meet all of these considerations, hundreds of different downspout boot sizes and configurations are required.
